Treatment Approaches
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a model that encourages individuals to explore the dynamic relationship between thought, feelings and behaviors. CBT has been demonstrated to be an effective model of treatment for individuals dealing with mood disorders, anxiety disorders and chemical abuse/dependence.
Our group therapy provides individuals with a safe, supportive environment in which to increase insight into their current difficulties and to enhance coping skills, allowing our patients to return to their pre-crisis level of function at home, work and/or school. Our intensive outpatient program (IOP) environment fosters peer interaction and dialog which patients may utilize to improve their awareness and development of their interpersonal relationships.
We encourage each patient to develop and utilize their new coping skills to effectively manage and/ or mitigate their own unique stressors and triggers. We accomplish this by increasing the patient’s knowledge of their disease process and daily symptom management. Our daily groups focus on strategic coping, group therapy and medication evaluation/management working with our IOP psychiatrist.
Additionally, we incorporate a 12-Step Model as a daily guide for reflection, motivation and mindfulness. Intake assessments are available throughout the week.
Dialectic Behavioral Therapy
Dialectic behavioral therapy (DBT) is one of several different types of therapy that is used to empower the patient and assist in development of new skills, including work on development on non-maladaptive interpersonal relationship issues.
DBT skills and tools can be used almost every day. They can be useful in coping with difficult life situations, and assist in keeping focus on what is really important.
During our four week program, clients learn many new skills and techniques. Homework is required so that each client can practice their skills in a “real world” situation, and return to program for peer feedback, sharing of both success and failures in achieving the desired outcome. Like most new skills, learning takes time energy, and commitment. Our DBT program provides validation and learning in a structured and creative atmosphere. We share humor, creativity and each person participating provides their own relevancy from their personal life experience.
Dialectic is the skill of balancing two or more things that may be in conflict, or mismatched, yet both are perceived as true and real. Dialectic therapy skills teach balance between competing needs, allows each person’s perspective to be validated, and allows for exploration of the paradoxes in balance that are experienced in daily activities. Examples would be: want vs. need, feelings vs. thoughts, problems vs. solutions and actions vs. reactions
